Abu Zouz Abu Zouz has played hand drums and percussion instruments for over 15 years.  In 1999 he was introduced to the world of Middle Eastern music and it has become  his passion and focus in its many forms. As a student of Master Percussionist Souhail Kaspar, Joe’s focus is based on  classical form with solid technique.  Additional Middle Eastern training  includes classes and workshops with Issam  Houshan, Karim Nagi, Carmine Guida,   and Jim and Chrissy Miller.  He is particularly proud to have been given his  stage name Abu Zouz by Souhail. Abu Zouz  has performed in halflas and shows with Issam Houshan, Carmine Guida  and the local regional groups Jamundo and with members of Turku.   Joe has had  the pleasure to play for Yasmine of Magic Hips and is a regular musician at the  Carolina Renaissance Festival in Charlotte, NC on stage with the Jewels of the  Caravan.  He is also a founding member of the band The Second Hand Gypsy.  Whether you’re a dancer increasing your understanding of the music,  playing  as part of an ensemble or learning just for fun, playing the Tabla is an  exciting and rewarding adventure.  Abu Zouz is available for group and private  lessons in the Doumbek (Tabla) and Riq.  Lessons can be tailored to cover  technique, music theory, rhythms and dancer-drummer communication.
